Sports team from all over the world gather in Vancouver July 31 - August 9 to compete in Police and Fire Games 2009.

Just met the loud Russian Ministry of Home Affairs soccer team cruising the streets of Vancouver showing off their blue uniforms. Had a chat and wished all the luck on the upcoming match with the Brazilian team, tonight, August 3! Da, they are too among the many international teams competing in the 2009 World Police and Fire Games that are now running full speed all over town.

-What’s the prize? I asked

-The winner gets a whole medal and all the fame and respect you can imagine.

An incentive to compete for, I’ll say.

Started July 31, the games will run through August 9, will mark more than 40 venues and present more than 60 sporting events in 50 sport categories. It’s a serious project, alright.
The weather thankfully allows for such an event.
All the events are free to watch!

An intense heat wave is expected to hit Vancouver end of June beginning of July. A possibility of spreading fire isn’t excluded. Temperatures will rise unusually high, so consider yourself waned: it will be Hot and Burning in the house!

June 28 – July 5 International Flamenco Festival will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in Vancouver with proper fervor and passion! After performing in London, Miami, Washington and New York, Flamenco Festival is bringing its mesmerizing performance right here to our town.

Three performances, master classes, a lecture demo, photography exhibition, a gala celebration, and more will be in the program. A collaboration of Flamenco Rosario and Centro Flamenco is bringing to us Mexico’s renowned Sabas Santos and flamenco living legend Isabel Bayón, one of the major representatives of the Sevilla school of flamenco, who will highlight this year’s festival. Her current solo program La Puerta Abierta ( The Open Door ) is a reflection of a phantom extent, where by entering the performer freely expresses her passion. From door to door an artist’s journey of celebrating the moment in response to the tragic reality of life never ends.

It’s nearing the middle of June, which means lots of heat (yes, more) and of course the annual Car-Free Festival’s that are put on all around Vancouver.

This year, the event takes place on Sunday, June 14 and hopes to attract people of all ages from all around the Lower Mainland. Fun fact: In previous years, this event has brought in more than 35,000 people. That’s pretty amazing.

I digress. The point is to go out and celebrate in having a possible car-free Vancouver in the future. Creating a city that is both environmentally friendly and still easily accessible.

What you may or may not know is that the event actually has four different locations around town. There’s one on Commercial Drive between Venables and 1st Ave. Another at Main Street between 12th and King Edward and the other two in the West End and Kitsilano respectively. Pretty much wherever you live, you’re going to be close to one.

What’s great about this event is it’s not only free, but there’s plenty to do! There’s live music, street hockey and even (brace yourself) roller disco.

Yes, roller disco.

So if you have no better plans on Sunday, go around to any of these neighbourhoods around 12 p.m. when the events start. It goes all day.

Oh, I almost forgot. There’s valet bike parking.

Yeah.

It turns out I have a fixie, and my roommate’s apparently got a freak. Which one do you have? Oh, you don’t have one?.. But of course you do! And no, these are not contagious… We didn’t know what these names were ourselves until we wheeled to check out the Velo-City exhibit at Museum of Vancouver. The exhibit is dedicated to all those who share the passion for bicycling and to their loyal two-wheeled friends.

Organized by three Propellor Design enthusiasts Pamela Goddard, Nik Rust, and Toby Barratt, Velo-City: Vancouver and the Bicycle Revolution is caught in the momentum of cycling culture gone berserk. Commuters, cruisers, choppers, pursuiters, bmx’rs, randonneurs and critical massers- just to name a few. After these peculiar animals you will never look at a bicycle the same way again.

The exhibition started June 4 and will run until September 7.
To become a part of the exhibit and leave your trail in history, have a photo of you and your bike featured on the Velo-Love Wall by submitting it to their Flickr group.

For other events in the neighbourhood swing by Vancouver Events Visual Calendar.
